Common Causes for Pipe Corrosion

Corroded Pipes?! Yikes!

Do You have Corroded Pipes in Your Plumbing?

If you have corroded pipes in your home, you’re not alone. Pipes can and most likely will rust over time naturally, but there are things that you can do to prevent or prolong that.

Gas pipes, water lines, and sewer drains can all, for the most part, corrode due to things like oxidation, velocity, and chemicals. Obviously, a corroded pipe is not something that you would want to happen, so how can we prevent it?

First, we need to know what causes pipe corrosion.

Poor workmanship, drain cleaners, food waste, and urine are among the many common reasons that pipes can corrode.

How to Prevent Pipe Corrosion?

There are ways to help keep your pipes in good standing such as:

Soften your water. Hard water has a lot of minerals in it that can erode pipes and eat away at the metals over time.

Don’t use chemical root killers or drain cleaners. There are so many chemicals used in drain cleaners that breakthrough the clog, but they also break through the pipes!

Proper maintenance. We recommend annual cleanings to ensure your pipes are clean and strong. Although we would like to have homeowners keep up with yearly maintenance, we definitely do not recommend going over three years without a cleaning.
