How to Clean a Sump Pump

What is a Sump Pump?

If you have a basement, you should have a sump pump. A sump pump is your first line of defense against flooding. That is why it is so important to make sure that they are working, and a great way to do that is to make sure they are staying clean!

Inspect and Clean Your Sump Pump

One of the biggest reasons that a sump pump fails is because it is obstructed by objects such as rocks, golf balls, toys, etc. These items can find their way through the pump’s pipes and land in the crock of the pump or the pit.

The age of your sump pump is also another factor that can determine its effectiveness. If your pump is over 5 or 6 years old, it’s time to replace it.

If you’re going to pull the pump out to inspect it, you have to make sure that you get a really good connection back to the existing pipe. That pump shakes a lot and creates a lot of hydraulic shock, and you have to make sure you have a very good, secure connection, preferably with a steel-jacketed band, not just a rubber flexible band.
